The Girl Scouts Program

The Girl Scout program is an informal educational program designed to help girls put into practice the fundamental principles of the Girl Scout Movement as set forth in the Preamble. It is carried out in small groups with adult leadership and provides a wide range of activities developed around the interests and needs of girls.

Girl Scouts are girls of all races, religions, national origins and economic backgrounds. Girl Scouting is divided into five program levels so that activities are flexible as girls change. The Girl Scout Program is tailored to each age level, so girls can progress in their learning and experiences in Girl Scouting year after year.

Girl Scouts do not have to participate in troops. They may attend council events and work on badges independently.

The Girl Scout Program:

  • Is girl-driven. It reflects the interests and needs of participating girls.
  • Prepares girls with a variety of experiences.
  • Offers age-appropriate activities at each age level.
  • Encourages a progression of skill development and responsibility through the different age levels.
  • Promotes the development of leadership, character, conduct and community service.
  • Teaches decision-making skills.

The Girl Scout program is based on four goals. Each of these goals specifie s will grow and develop through the Girl Scout experience. The Girl Scout program goals serve as a useful tool in planning activities with girls. When you keep in mind these program goals, you help ensure that girls benefit from the complete Girl Scout experience.
